What
are the traits of a good, licensable, toy product?
(Robert, IL)
Great
question! Since types of toy products can vary
so greatly from paper and cardboard games to plastic
figures and electronic devices, we'll give you
a list of general things you should keep in mind
as you develop any type of toy or game product.
1) Can your product secure
a meaningful patent?
The patent office will grant you a patent for
almost anything, but is there something so unique
and different about your toy or game's patent
that would allow it to hold up in a court of law?
(This leads directly to #2.)
2) A unique mechanism.
A new and unique mechanism will not only catch
the eye of toy companies but can also help you
by giving you a more secure patent. If someone
knocks off your product and the knock off uses
your mechanism, it's much easier to pursue them
legally.
3) "Wow! Factor"
or "I've never seen this before!"
Manufacturers want to take consumers by surprise
with new and exciting products that they couldn't
have thought of on their own.
Keeping these ideas in
mind will help you qualify your product even before
you consider submitting it for evaluation by our
